How To Layer Skincare Products the Right Way

Figuring out how to layer skincare products shouldn’t require a dermatology degree. But somehow, between all the serums, toners, and “don’t mix this with that” rules, creating a good skincare routine can feel like a bit of a minefield.

And the order you apply your skincare makes a real difference. It’s not about perfection or doing ten steps just because TikTok said so, it’s about layering skincare ingredients the right way and helping each product actually work. And when your skin feels properly cared for, healthy and balanced, you feel better, too.

So, let’s walk through it: the simple, correct skincare steps order that gives you your healthiest glow. From how to layer serums and moisturizers to what products are best in the AM and PM, we spill all the details you need to know.

Why Skincare Layering Order Matters

Here’s the thing: every formula you apply has a job, and it can only do it well if it reaches the right layer of your skin.

For example, light, water-based formulas (like serums or toners) are made to deliver active ingredients deep into the skin, while thicker, oil-based products (like creams or face oils) are made to lock in that hydration and create a protective barrier for your skin.

If you’ve already slathered on a thick, oil-based cream or oil, applying a serum or toner is like trying to pour water over a plastic wrap. Nothing’s getting through. For example, applying an occlusive moisturizer before your brightening serum can block or at minimum dilute actives, meaning that serum’s promised lit-from-within glow might never come.

So yes, the correct skincare routine order really can make or break your results.

What Is the Correct Skincare Routine Order?

Let’s make it simple. Here’s your go-to skincare steps order cheat sheet:

Cleanser → Toner or Essence → Serum → Eye Cream → Moisturizer → Sunscreen (in the AM) or Oil (PM).

Knowing what order to apply skincare products ensures your skincare routine is as effective as possible. Each product can be absorbed properly by your skin, and each step ensures the next is even more effective. For example, cleansing and toning ensures your serum and moisturizer reach the deeper layers of your skin.

How to Apply Toners, Serums and Moisturizers

Wondering how to apply serum and moisturizer, along with other products in your skincare lineup? Here’s the golden rule: thin to thick. Light, watery products go first. Creamier, richer ones go last.

So: toner → serum → moisturizer → oil (if you use one).

And between each step? Wait about 30–60 seconds. This ensures each product is absorbed properly by your skin instead of just sitting on the surface or mixing with previous layers. Plus it prevents pilling (a must-avoid especially if you’re about to do your makeup).

Where Does Sunscreen Go in Your Routine?

This one’s easy: sunscreen always goes last in your morning routine.

Even if your foundation says it has SPF, it’s not enough on its own. Sunscreen should be your final step before makeup, and ideally one you actually look forward to applying.

Our Protect + Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel SPF 30 is lightweight, non-greasy, and leaves your skin looking radiant (never chalky or greasy). It’s powered by probiotic extracts, pineapple, papaya, and wild butterfly ginger root, so you’re feeding your skin as well as

Now you know how to apply sunscreen in your skincare routine, there’s no skipping this step, ever.

Skincare Layering Mistakes to Avoid

We’ve all made them… Here are the big ones to avoid:

  • Applying heavy creams before lightweight serums

  • Layering too many actives at once (your skin doesn’t need to do HIIT training)

  • Not waiting between steps (give each layer a chance to sink in)

  • Forgetting SPF, especially after exfoliating or brightening products

  • Forgetting you need a little patience and a consistent skincare routine to transform your results.

Skincare Layering FAQs

Do I need face oil and moisturizer?

You can use both! Moisturizer hydrates; oil locks it in. Use oil last for an extra boost of radiance and to really lock in that moisture.

When should I use retinol in my routine?

Only at night, after cleansing and before moisturizer. And don’t forget SPF the next day.

Can I use exfoliating acids daily?

Not usually. Most are best 2–3 times a week to avoid irritation. Overexfoliation isn’t exactly your skin’s favorite thing.

Can I skip toner?

Totally. It’s optional, but use it if your skin likes the extra hydration, or if you want that extra prep step for your serums and moisturizer.
