A dime-sized amount of cleanser. A pea-sized amount of moisturizer. Serums and treatment drops go on in small quantities — a few drops covers the face, and more does not accelerate the result. Sunscreen is the exception: a facial sunscreen only delivers its stated SPF when applied as a generous, even layer, so this is the one step where being sparing undermines the product.

Unlike other gift sets, The Vault is a complete routine. If you already own products you like, the Vault's pieces can be used together as a regimen or separately, so you can bring in the steps you are missing and hold the rest.

The order that matters is thinnest to thickest: toner, then serum, then treatment drops, then moisturizer, then SPF in the morning. The step people most often get wrong is putting sunscreen under moisturizer, which reduces the protection it provides. Apply SPF after moisturizer.

Cleanser, moisturizer toner and SPF are daily. The exfoliant is not — start at once or twice a week and adjust. Treatment drops and serums are typically nightly but are worth introducing one at a time rather than simultaneously, so that if your skin reacts you know what caused it.

Ten products arriving at once is the situation where people most often irritate their skin. Begin with the cleanser, moisturizer and SPF for the first week. Add the serum and hydrating steps in week two. Introduce the exfoliant and treatment drops last, one at a time.
